BULB setting for Nikon

I have the nikon D5000, I'm trying to do the painting with light technique. I have my setting on manual, I go to BULB setting, and it's not allowing me to take the picture. What do I need to change?? HELP!

just a guess, but do you have auto focus off?? could be the camera is trying to focus and not grabbing anything

if your camera has nothing to focus on, or can't focus in the dark, it won't let you take the photo without being able to lock in the focus..which it can't do. You may want to switch to manual focus, or try switching to "C" focus mode instead of "S" mode. Let me know if that solves your problem...and you probably want to take your camera out of auto mode
