Default stupid question... - cropping

I have a Canon 7D which shoots at 18 MP.. when I try to crop my images to 11X 14 (just an example) I lose alot of the image.. about 2.5 inches.. is there a way to resize my images without distorting them to keep the whole image??

thanks

No.

The camera natively shoots in a 3:2 aspect ratio. That gives you a 6x4 or 4x6, 12x8 or 8x12, etc, etc.

The 11x14 is a different aspect ratio and you would have to lose some of the photo some where. If you know you're going to crop it to a certain aspect ration then unfortunately you'll have to shoot with that crop in mind.

edit: There is no such thing as a stupid question.

Hi,

I have a question kinda on the back of this.

I have been shooting in RAW now for a few weeks and find that no matter what aspect ratio I have the camera set at (normally its 16:9) the RAW file is 3:2.

So does this mean I may as well leave the camera aspect ratio at 3:2 so I know what I'm actually gonna work with during post proccessing?

RAW means you're capturing the raw data from the sensor. So in camera settings like color enhancements, noise reduction, or cropping to a certain aspect ratio would be ignored. If you were to shoot RAW+JPG the jpg would be cropped to the correct aspect ratio, but the same RAW file would be at the sensor's aspect ratio.
