Default Snowflakes

I took some pictures of my horses with heavy snow coming down thinking it would be a great shot. I kind of messed up but what is the best way to capture snowflakes without ruining your subject?

What i did recently with a family shot outside in snow, is put the camera on a tripod. Set the camera to take a few shots in a burst, and fire away. Hopefully the horses will stand still for a couple of seconds. In my case the camera was under the cover of a carport, so I could mess around with it without getting snow all over it.
Layer the two best images in Photoshop. Erase out any bad snowflakes over your subjects from the top image, letting the bottom one show through. Odds are the two images won't have snow in exactly the same place, and you can eliminate some of the worst flakes.
