Default Resolution

A photo editor asked me if I would send her one of my photos to be tested for resolution. She wrote back and told me she could only use thumbnails since my image was only 2.7 inches by 3 inches and should be 300.

I have a point and shoot camera plus photo editing software. My question is can I do something to increase the resolution of my photo? If I can, please give me simple non technical instructions.

Thanks,
Barb Chandler

First, what is your camera? Post the pic in question.

I don't understand what you mean 'post pic in question.' Do you mean in my original post or elsewhere?

Post the picture that is an issue. There could be a few things. Your camera could be setup wrong, your email could have shrunk the photo etc. Even if you hover your mouse over the picture and tell us how big it is eg 4000X3000 pixels (assuming you are on a PC)

currently you have not given enough information to help you.

I think I am starting to piece it all together. Accessing your Flickr helped me a lot. One more questions. What programs do you use to work with your photos?

I will try to explain this as non-geek as I can. The photos on your flickr match the dimensions that the editor gave. Your Camera is not making this dimension exactly. It's not one of its default sizes. This makes me think that some software you are using is shrinking your pictures without you asking it to. We just have to figure out what program is doing it.

You have a good eye for composition. Your photos are nice. You would do yourself good to try to learn the technical side of photography. You need to at least make sure you know the basic settings in your camera so you can make sure it is taking the highest resolution and best quality it can. There is a chance that if you still have the original picture file it might be a higher resolution. If it is you just have to figure out how to send it.

My photo-editing software is Paint Shop ProX. I believe the only thing I did to this picture was to crop it and, darken a bit. I'm pretty sure I didn't re-size it.

I used to know all the technical aspects of photography in my younger days, maybe it'll come back to me when I study the book that came with my camera.

Does cropping ruin the resolution?

Thanks,
Barb
