Default Hyperfocal distance

Ok so I believe that I understand hyperfocal distance, and sometimes it works. The problem is some of my lenses do not have distance markers or markers that show the distance I need. Example, for my 50D with a CoC of .019, at 85 mm the HFD is 56', my lense does not have a 56' marker. So without resorting to a tape measure, does anyone have tips on finding the correct focal point? I find that being off even a little renders the shot out of focus.

A quick SWAG of hyperfocal distance at 85mm at F/10 gives me a hyper focal distance of 35 meters....COC is irrelevant to hyperfocal distance...
To come up with 56ft you'd have to be around f/22.. (I would think that is beyond the coc for the sensor)

Try working f/11- f/16 and it should be less problematic....Hyperfocal distance should not be a "critical" distance...close enough works for me...

A Hyperfocal distance of 56' means that everything between 28' and infinity should be acceptably sharp. What part of the shot is out of focus? Without markings on the lens, estimating distance is the best you can do. Like sk66 said, it's not likely that hyperfocal distance is critical. A decent estimate should provide good results. Being out by a little shouldn't ruin the shot.
