Default Capturing Steam

Does anyone have any tips on taking pictures of steam? I'd like to take a picture of a hot steamy cup of hot chocolate, or a bowl of soup. Should I use a dark background? Any lighting tips? I have no tripod, or any special tools except my camera.

I took this a couple of years ago. I added the steam in Photohop Elements. As I recalled, I did a search for "how to create steam" and found several methods.

Didn't even think of photoshopping it in. Thanks.
