Similar principals to the answer here, except with a DSLR you have more control over the zone of sharpness.
Using leica d-lux 4 Basically, (1) Aperture priority (2) Aperture wide open (low F number) or almost wide open. (3) Background as far away as possible. (4) You should be able to control the appearance of the background by zooming into the subject, this will reduce the amount of background in the camera's view.
