Go with the 50mm or the 70-200mm.
You'll have to use your feet to zoom in and out with the 50 but it will be a smaller profile and lighter or you can save your feet some walking with the 70-200. The only bad thing about the 70-200 is that you'll have to be further away from your subject if you want to get their whole body in the frame. on top of that if you're really far away you'll have to worry about people walking in front of you.

the 50mm f/1.8 and CRANK the ISO up. You'll have to stand back for posed shots, but it'll serve great for some more candid stuff too.
As a side note: be sure to make sure YOU'RE visible as well as youre children, especially if you'll be taking pictures while standing in the street.

Another vote for the 50mm f1.8. You'll want the fastest lens you have for the low light.

Thanks so much, all. I am glad you are all picking the lighter lens....as much as I love my 70-200mm Tamron (new lens for me) it is like having a boulder around my neck when I can't take my monopod w/me.
Osmosis----Good advice to keep an eye on the kiddos in the dark. I can certainly get lost in the lens and forget that I'm in the middle of the road. The 50mm 1.8 is a new lens for me too (bought an old Minolta off of eBay) so I'm anxious to test out its capabilities. |
