So I've experienced how the camera can "guess" the proper exposure on whether or not you have the eyepiece covered. Having it covered is obviously more accurate. But when using full manual mode, does it matter? I suppose my real question is does any of the light entering the viewfinder and up on the sensor, and therefore affect the image?

On long exposures light entering the eyepiece can register on the image. I took a 4hr. star exposure and the light thru the eyepiece caused a "banding" type of effect.

It could, depending on ambient light levels. The only ambient light on that 4 hr shot was the moon/stars.

Try shooting 30s, in bright daylight. Yeah, it's necessary.
