Default Working the Scene - Some Questions

Now I have read many books describing how to work a scene properly. Much to my surprise it was something that I was already doing. Typically I have about 4-5 shots that are so so and then one at the end that pops. For whatever reason I seem to be able to tell when I have that popper and move on to another subject. Normally I can get the great shot if I work the scene properly. Sometimes I go away with so so but this is not the norm.

I am just wondering if anyone else sees this in their workflow. Do you work your way up to the popper also? How many shots does it take you honestly? Needless to say I am a volume shooter. When it comes to PP I would rather have a body of work to select from rather than just one shot. This also allows me to do believable HDR images.
