Question Help using Exposure Lock

Greetings -

I am trying to teach myself how to properly use the exposure lock function on my camera. I think this would be beneficial for some of my 'problem' shots of dark objects with bright backgrounds, ie scupltures, statues etc.

I realize cameras are different (I have the Olympus E-510) but I am assuming the steps are failrly similar.

Do I have these basic steps correct:

1. Focus on the subject you want to lock the exposure to and press the shutter button half-way down

2. With the shutter button held down and focused on the subject, press and hold in the AEL/AFL button

3. With the AEL/AFL still held down, you can release the shutter button completely, recompose and take the shot

These are the steps I think might be correct, but I can't quite find the procedures laid out in order.

Thanks in advance for tips!

Your camera will take the exposure from the center dot. Where you focus and where you take the exposure from, could be two different points.(you do have several metering modes)

Center the camera on the area you want to take the exposure from....................click the shutter half way to expose.....................click the meter lock button (there should be a light or icon in the view finder showing you the meter is locked)...................after the meter has locked, focus on the area you want focus from, holding the shutter button half down will lock the focus and you can then recompose with the meter and focus locked.
