Hi,
I've playing around with camera for a few months now and love my new found hobby. I am still trying to grasp when to use what lens. I shoot with a Nikon D5000 and have a 18-50mm lens as well as a 55-200 mm lens. This coming weekend I am going to the Minnesota Ren Fest and would like to get others advice of what I should put on as my main lens. I will have both there but want to minimize changing lens there as much as possible. I hope to get some good shots of all the costumes there and 'crowd' shots. I also want to take photos of the various shows that we will be going to see. Which lens would you mainly use and why?

It all depends how far away from your subjects you will be.
Costumes & crowd shots = the 18-50 mainly becuse it will give you room to work if you are close to the subject. If you want head shots etc,or you are a fair way away from the shows then then the 55 - 200. Mainly because you can "reach in". Try shooting wide open for the head shots to isolate the background.

18-55 for general use, swap to the 55-200 for things like jousting.
