When I was in high school I shot a lot of sports. My staff adviser got me using a technique where I used a flash bracket to sit on my left shoulder. Use my left eye to shoot but keep the right eye open. This accomplished two things. First the camera is more steady. Second it keeps you from getting creamed on the sidelines. You can see it coming.

I carried this technique over to doing weddings. With both eyes open you see what the camera sees when the shutter clicks. No chimping with film. You know instantly if someone blinks or looks away.

It is easier now that we have autofocus. I still shoot with both eyes open but mostly use my right eye on the viewfinder.
ha!
i was wondering th same thing,
i keep both eyes open and use my right eye.. a while back i was on the rifle team shooting long distance in compentition with a .25-06 Remington and a 12x20 scope. keeping both eyes open reduced fatigue and allowed for a more steady stance. eventually i started using a patch to cover my open eye. while i dont use the patch when shooting photos, i have found that keeping both eyes open can help with focusing and reducing eye fatigue.

I use my left eye, I'm left handed for some tasks and right handed for others, not sure if that makes a difference.

I use my right eye to the viewfinder. I've been shooting rifles for years and always use the right eye, although with a little thought I can shoot (rifle) with both eyes open. Haven't tried that with the camera though, could be very useful in sports photography.
