Default Shutter speed

I took some photos the other day at a gundog show. I tried shooting in shutter speed mode but found that the images were way too dark So I put it back on to sports mode. My question is. Is there away to brighten up the images with a higher shutter speed

As far as camera settings, you'd need either a wider aperture (smaller f/#) or a higher ISO. Those are pretty much the only things that will help your camera get more light.

However, if you were shooting in shutter priority and the photos are still dark, I'd probably have a look at whether or not you were limiting how high the ISO would go. If you're not limiting the ISO (and it can go as high as your camera will let you), the camera should also be choosing as wide an aperture as it thinks it needs.

So at that point, you've either reached the limits of your lens, or your camera's metering differently than you'd like. So, for example, if you're using evaluative / matrix metering and it's metering the whole scene, but if the subject is brightly lit, then maybe you could get a faster shutter speed if you change to say, spot metering.

But, I'm going to go ahead and say that it might be that you're hitting the limits of the lens.

Any chance you could post an example, or even some example EXIF from one of the shots you were taking?

And maybe if they aren't too bad, you could just lighten them in post.

Note: Sorry for rambling, I shouldn't post shortly after waking up

what shuterspeed were you using?
I assume you had Auto ISO off.
Shutterspeed priority will only change the aperture to get the corrrect exposure if Auto so is off.. (or as Nicole pointed out, is limited).

so, what if its already shooting wide open, and its STILL too dark?

up the ISO - there are tradeoffs.. if you up the ISO too much you will start getting grain and such.. which isnt always the end of the world.

this might help
