I'm making a short documentary and thought using my DSLR would probably be a good idea. Also looking into filming music.
I have a Nikon D5000 I don't have any high expectations of the mic inbuilt, but will it be okay for an interview or something similar? Anyone have any experiance? Also wondering which lens to use. I currently own a Nikon 18-105 VR and a Nikon 50mm F/1.8 AFVR lens... I thought it would probably be best to shoot with the 18-105, then I thought I might get a better looking depth of field with a F/1.8? As for external mics for filming bands, any reccomendations? Thanks in advance

I'd definitely go with the 50mm for shooting video. You've got to be using manual focus anyway, and youve got liveview to help you out. Even if you're still using middle-of-the-road apertures (like f/5.6), the images will be sharper and clearer.

I've not used a D5000, but...
1. Almost (depending on your end goal) Youtube, fine? Broadcast TV, not so good. (wouldn't pass qa) 2. I use a 50mm, 24-70mm and a 100-400mm on my Canon 5DMkII - Use whatever you like, experiment. 3. Rode for me works v. well Either this one -> Rode SVM Stereo Condenser Microphone Hope that helps.

Yeah I figured the 50mm would probably look nicer.
The goal, as far as the doco goes (this is for a year 12 art assignment) is just dvd/web (not youtube because of quality rape, probably vimeo - splitting hairs i know) and just web stuff for bands for fun I guess... Considering I only really shoot shows for fun, aside from if friends ask me to shoot a promo. Thanks for the mic advice also! I'll do some tests and see how it goes.
