Red face Are the specs of each photo embedded in the photo data? how does one access them

I'm new to the DSLR photo game.

I'm noticing that everyone seems to post the specs of each photo they take. Focal Length, Shutter speed, aperture, ISO etc...

How is this recorded other than writing it down for every shot?? Is it embedded in the data of the image? How does one access that information?

I use a Nikon D5000
only have iPhoto for post-production work.

thanks
Dave

I'm not sure about MACs, but on a PC, I can right-click on an image and select "properties" to see all that info.

iPhoto should have something that shows you the EXIF info, which is what that data is called. So google on how to see EXIF with iPhoto... luck!

If you upload the images to Flickr to share them, there's a link to "More Properties" on the image page that shows you the EXIF data as well. Or, if you're using the new redesign, it's under "Actions" -> "View EXIF Data".

The camera attaches all the settings like shutterspeed, aperture etc to the jpeg file. It is known as metadata or EXIF info.

To view EXIF info under iphoto try,

Quote:
The EXIF data does indeed show up in iPhoto. Select the photo you wish to view info for. Right Click (Ctrl+Click) and select from the resultant menu click "show photo info". The same info can be seen by clicking on "Photo" from the menu bar and selecting show photo info.
Got the above from Apple Support Forum.

If you post to flickr (the site most of us use in conjunction with this site) it will post the EXIF data for you but there are also some other choices. You can go to the site Jefferey's EXIF viewer and get the information there, however, at some point you are going to want some software to manage and manipulate your images and all of those programs, Photoshop, PS Elements, GIMP, etc., have tools for viewing and managing EXIF data.
For the purposes of this site, we are not looking for every single piece of metadata your camera produces, but the basics of exposure and lens adjustments. Sometimes it can be helpful in making suggestions if you know the aperture, ISO, shutter speed and focal length used in capturing the image.

In iPhoto, click on Photos > Show Extended Photo Info

That will bring up a window with all your exposure information I had to double check because it's changed in iPhoto '09 from '08. In '08, I believe it's just ⌘+I
