Default f controls

Hi, on the d90 under F4 assign AE-L/AF-L button, what do all those different locks mean? I've tried reading the manual. It's confusing. I'm talking about AE/AF lock, AE lock only, AF lock only, AE lock (hold), FV lock. I don't know when to use each one. If I want to keep my focus centered and then recompose, I keep it on single point. How do I use these functions? Thanks. Your site is wonderful!

Default

Default is AE(autoexposure) and AF (autofocus) lock, which means the camera won't remeter or refocus while you're holding the button down.

AE lock (hold) holds the exposure lock after you press button; you can release it without losing your AE lock. Pressing the button again cancels the lock. If you don't take a picture before the meter turns itself off, that will also cancel the lock.

FV lock is flash value lock.
