Yeah I know that feeling. I have a Canon AE-1 (Film SLR) and I still have trouble using the flash just because I rarely use it. Plus I really can't test out my settings because it costs me each time.

Is 900X600 Too big????? I sized it down from 3504X2336. I don't think 900 Is too big unless your on a really small monitor.

Don't get me wrong. I love a big photo just as much as the next guy. I have a 19" monitor set to 1600x1200 so it isn't a "fit it on the screen" issue. My only thought was that if some of these threads start getting long with lots of images posted it could cause pages to start loading slowly. I have experienced this on Flickr quite a bit. The other thing was that large images blow out wider than the forum layout itself. Anyway, it was just a question for the moderator, especially since we are in the "testing" phase.

I've not put a limit on sizes yet but instead have set it to show 10 comments per page which means even with a photo in each one it shouldn't take too long to load.

However - if it gets to be an issue we can consider a size limit.

What do you think would make a good maximum size if we were to have one?

when i got my first dslr, i always shot in portrait mode. then i wondered why i had this fancy camera and shot in almost full auto mode? so in an effort to learn exposure i did this:

1) shot for one month in shutter priority mode
2) shot for one month in aperture priority mode
3) shot for one month in manual mode

after those three months i gained a much better understanding of exposure. i now find myself shooting in aperture priority mode the most, unless the situation dictates otherwise.

I agree, if the person wants to see it larger they can go to flickr.

I tend to use Aperture and Shutter priority more than manual mode. I only flick over to manual when I cannot get things to work in the above mentioned modes.

Really good idea, I think I'll give that a try.

After all that she's usually gone and the shot is lost so Aperture priority is far easier.
ISO is part of the exposure. The D50 and many other Nikon cameras has auto ISO that automatically ups the ISO setting when shutter speed is longer than your preset (shooting in A mode). One "mostly" manual shooting mode I've come across is put the D50 in manual mode, pick your shutter speed and aperature, and let the auto ISO take care of the rest. As long as you aren't hitting the extremes, the exposure should be as good as in aperature or shutter priority modes.

I haven't found an use for this tip yet, but I guess that's one way to learn your camera's exposure metering under different lighting conditions.

One thing I haven't figured out is what the P mode does on my D50. I mean I know what it does technically, but what is the difference between that and Auto?
