Try shooting at maximum ISO and fastest aperture (lowest F number)

An understanding of how ISO, shutter speed and aperture effect the exposure of your image will go a long way to understanding how aperture and shutter priority work.

Take some pictures in Auto mode and look at the settings the camera picks to get a decent exposure. It sounds like you didn't buy your camera to spend all your time in Auto mode (neither did I) but it is a good place to start.

Say it goes for 1/100s shutter speed, f/11 aperture and ISO800, you might want to open up the aperture to that much regarded "sharp subject / blurry background" effect. You could try taking the aperture to f/5.6 (two full stops on the standard scale). To compensate and stop the image being overexposed, you could either use a faster shutter speed (if your subject is moving fast, this will avoid motion blur) or take the ISO down to 200.
