I would guess on the first pix that it was done when the pix were taken,, only at 1/3 of a second exposure, DAve

I just moved your 2 threads into 1 and into the technique area. We prefer if people don't cross-post since that way all your answers are in one easy to find place.

My first thought is actually second curtain flash or slow sync flash.
An Explanation of 2nd Curtain Sync Flash (or Slow Sync Flash)

The flash freezes the subject, but the motion blur is still there.

The EXIF does show it was shot at 1/3 of a second.

Yup, definitely rear-curtain sync flash on a longish exposure.

Where did you find the photos? Could you provide links for the sites you have borrowed them from (to keep us on the right side of "fair use" vs "image theft").

Thanks,

Wulf

As for the effect in the PP work I have saw this tutorial around the place:

Fashion Lomo | Photo Effects | all-pages

Its a kinda washed out lomo effect which seemed to be used a lot in fashion pics, its not identical but I think maybe with a few changes it may prove a starting point in conjunction with the shooting techniques mentioned above.

Thanks you guys, I'll try the rear flash sync :-)

Wolf: The second image is taken from zemotion . art . travel . life and the first one from ModelMayhem but I can't find the profile whereI took that from. But since the photo has the watermark on it then it's no stealing or is it? Both images are linked back here so can I just submit the image links instead of website links?

Image links would do but, as a general principle, always try and give full credit to who took the picture and where you found it. Also, do pay attention to terms and conditions on the sites you find things. If you are in doubt whether they give permission for you to reuse a picture, it is better to just give a link and perhaps show your own attempt at creating the effect as an illustration.
