How to hold edge detail when blowing out the sky?

Hi all,

When I have a back lit subject and the sky is totally blown out I normally don't like the results because I lose all the edge detail. The edges of the person turn soft and the blown highlights creep into my subject.

I saw this image today which is much better than I normally do.

I know I can reduce the subject to background exposure difference via a reflector or flash etc but shot of that is there a secret to doing this effectively?

it could be they are burning down the edge flare in post...

That my friend is called BLOOM. It happens when the light wraps around a subject and is generally seen in overexposure or with poor and/or deliberate lighting control. No way around it, im afraid.

Thanks. I noticed that in the picture I supplied he has dark hair. I am used to shooting my blond son so I am sure bloom affects a white head more.
