Question I cannot turn flash off when I change the Aperture

I have a nikon d3000. I'm very new, and I'm playing around with aperture.
I've read that in low-light conditions, a higher f number is good to use because of the correlating shutter speed.
And for portraits, I need a lower f number to blur the background.

Right track?

So when I lower or raise the aperture, either by
1)Putting my camera on the "A" and turning the dial or
2)Going to "Guide" and then changing the aperture so I can blur the background

...It still won't allow me to disable flash. It only allows me to choose between different types of flashes.

What am I missing?

Expanding on Osmosis...

In the semi-auto modes, the flash is entirely controlled physically. To put it up, you press the little lightening bolt button near the side of the flash. To turn the flash off, just push it down until it clicks.

Are you saying that the flash pops up again on its own?

Default ok wow at me

Thanks so much guys (or gals), I really didn't know that I could put the flash down. Silly me. I just tested it and no it didn't pop back up.

Thanks!
