High ISO is for situations where you cant open the aperture any larger (or dont want to) and can't lower the shutterspeed without getting blur. Usually it's for the darker situations you might face.
Raising the ISO is also useful in "good" light though, because there are times when you're going to want either a smaller aperture or a faster shutter speed, or both, and there just isnt enough light. This is particularly useful for sports. Below (linked) is a rather low-noise shot of a high ISO, taken at 2000ISO on a D80. Cranked. by ~OsmosisStudios on deviantART

Thanks for the info...I doubt I would need anything higher than 3200 ISO? I'm looking at a new camera and I'm stuck between 2...one has a much high ISO range than the other...and I don't see myself needing it.

Most cameras today can go pretty high with ISO...what you really want to know is how well do they do it. Just because a camera can go to say ISO 1600 doesn't mean the images won't look like crap starting at ISO 400

I'm looking at the Rebel XSi...vs...the T1i...I'm leaning towards the XSi and using that little bit in price difference and picking up a 50mm lens.

Take these for example: JaredPolin.com Photography - Blog - Nikon D3s Hi-ISO review and 10,000 ISO*samples They were shot with a D3s at 10,000 ISO. The picture you see are straight from the RAW file with no editing and if you click the image, you can get the full res shot. To me, this is the best example of "You never know till you try it," as far as high ISO goes and it shows you that you may not know what the best ISO is until you need it. |
