Default Tips On Taking Pics Of Chinese Lantern Festival

We are having a Chinese Festival in Toronto tomorrow NIGHT and I am assuming we will have static displays of traditional Chinese things like lanterns and the dragon dance etc.

I have a Nikon 5000 SLR and flash.

Any tips would be appreciated.

One tip I have come across is to get there early and find a nice spot and set up your camera and pretty much wait for the ambiant light to reach the same as that of the lights in the lanterns or xmass lights or what ever light it is and then you will have a bit of time to take some snaps with out the need of flash as the scene will be balanced. I just thought I would throw that out there as an alternative
