Default Sigma 30 f/1.4 - should I get one?

A friend has a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 he no longer wants, should I buy it from him? How good is the lens, what are the pro's and con's to it? Considering this for Nikon DX use (D300, D90, D5000).

Here's a good review of the lens for Canon applications but it should be relevant for Nikon.

It's a good lens, great if you want something close to a 50mm equivalent on the cropped sensor. My caveat would be that if you move up to full frame, I don't find the 30-35mm length that useful; you will probably want either 24-28 or 50mm instead. But it's up to you.

Why don't you borrow the lens and try it out?

Several comments about it (aka the Dirty Thirty) at nikoncafe.

"If you get a good copy and can live with the sometimes annoying AF."

"I used it more than my 50mm 1.4."

He said he would lend it to me for a week or two, I was just wondering if I should take him up on that or not.

Why not try it? It get's mixed reviews, and with most lenses there are good/bad examples.
I would say, unless you want better low light capability, it might be used very little.
