I've got a pair of SB600's and must admit I don't use them much and really have a lot of trouble setting them up. The manual sucks and the buttons are very non-intuitive.
I've got one set to work on channel 2 as the "A" group for off camera use. I tried putting on the hot shoe and of course it would not work, as I guess I need to tell it to work on camera. How do I go about doing that? Also what is the function of the zoom on the flash and what does it actually do. Any help on how to program these things would be great, and maybe I would actually use them more. Thanks.

Go into the menu, an change the little '~' symbol to off. That makes it work on-camera.
Zoom moves the tube back and forth in the head, making for wider or more focused light. It adjusts automatically with newer lenses, or you can change it between 18-85mm, or 14mm if you flip the diffuser down. I think the setting to adjust it manually is Zoom-M or something like that. Edit: Zoom and ' - ' together opens the menu, + and - scroll, and Mode changes the option. You have to have remote operation turned off to get to most of the options. press and hold the two buttons with the "reset arrow" between them (mode and pwr). That puts it back into TTL. The two buttons connected with "csm" allows you to put it back into remote mode.
