For a general purpose long long tele which would be ok for landscapes and large wildlife that isn't too far away, I would be looking at

(1) Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS
Good value for money small & light. (I own one)
Not for full frame cameras

(2) Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
I step up from EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS - It is my travel lens telephoto of choice.

(3) Canon 70-200 L
Four choices depending on your budget,
I own the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM
Super IQ & super fast focussing. Small and light. Not so good in poor light.

For wildlife I would not shoot with anything under 400mm.
I shoot (mostly) urban wildlife like birds etc with a.
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM is my long tele zoom.
Fast focussing, good IQ, very versatile focal length range.
Downsides are that it is heavy to hand hold for long periods of time (I do use a mono pod sometimes) and not so good in low light.

Dear All,

Thanks for your suggestions, after a lot surfing and going through reviews I was thinking to go for the below ,hence I already have a 28 - 135 which will serve for landscape. So the 300 one I can use for longer range. Guys give me ur suggestion on this.
Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM $1280
Canon EF 1.4x II extender telephoto $300

And please give me some good models on Tripod I heard Manfrotto & Benro are good let me know which models will be suitable for me,and what are the areas I have to look on while purchasing tripods.

Thanks

I have been using a Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod. It is a big, rugged tripod and at well under $200 a fantastic value. I am using it with a Smith Victor BH5 ballhead. Together they will safely support any gear I am likely to own.

Well, just like you, I'm also looking for a new tele lens...but for my Nikon.

I've been looking for the Tamron AF 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD IF Macro, which costs about 700 dollars. I know it is a little bit expensive but cheaper than Nikon's similar and also very fast lens.

Would you guys recommend me to go with that? Also, Tamron is having good reviews, but do you have any experience with it?

By being a Macro lens, could I use it to shoot like my (soon to be) new born son when asleep, from a not-so-close distance and yet have very close in terms of shooting "macro" photos?

Oh, by the way, I've just biught my Nikon, a freshman in photography!!

do you want to do landscapes or wildlife photography? because a long telephoto lens would be good for wildlife, but you can't beat a super wide-angle lens for awesome landscape photos...
