Default Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM

Canon just announced the replacement for their 15-year old lens. Check it out:

Canon releases EF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS II USM lens: Digital Photography Review

No prices announced yet, but I saw a mention that it will be available in the EU in February, US in April. The EU price works out to over $3000. *GULP*

When Nikon came out with there new version, the price of the old version went up a little bit. I'm still waiting for it to come down.

That's around 4300 USD. YIKES!!!! That 2700 GBP must include VAT. I can't believe that the base price is that high. Even if the VAT is around 20%, making the base price 2250 GBP, our price would still be an eye-popping 3600 USD.

I wonder if they're using the old trick of keeping the digits the same, but changing the currency, so that it costs 2700 in all currencies, as if the exchange rate was 1:1. In that case, it would still be a $700 premium over the current model.

The UK price is usually very high at exchange: it usually comes out to a 1:1 rate. I'd wager the US MSRP is about $2700. Street will be about $2500.

Aw crap. They dumped the f/2.8 non-IS. I guess they figured if you can afford f/2.8, you can afford IS. But that seriously blows.

The UK price will include VAT (17.5%). What normally happens with stuff from US companies is they knock off the the $ sign and add a £ sign despite exchange rates being far from 1:1. Don't know what will happen going the other way though.
