Question Improve portraits with ext. flash or new lens?

I'm just beginning with my Canon Rebel DSLR. I am going to a RMSP weekend (by B&H photography) next month to learn more!

So far, I have had the most trouble with indoor light (where I take the majority of my pics) and I especially want to improve my portrait-type pics of my boys.

Should I get a 50mm 1.8 lens first or do you think an external flash/possibly a diffuser would help me the most right now??

My budget is small, but I have birthday money coming my way.....can't decide which one should be first on the "to buy" list.......??

Thanks! Randa

In the words of Strobist..

"remembering that light gives you far more bang-for-the-buck than does fast glass or the latest digital camera or 300/2.8"

A 50mm f1.8 would not be a bad addition to your kit, especially for the price. But if you're after portraits and whatnot, an external flash wouldn't be a bad choice either. A vivitar 285HV can be had for around $100 (same price as the 50mm f1.8) It is a fully manual flash, but one that I believe can be learned very fast.

These were all taken with a Canon Rebel XS, the kit lens, and an old external flash.

A fast lens will help you shoot in low light, however sometimes low available lighting can be pretty awful (depending on what you are looking for).
I feel an external flashgun that can be tilted & rotated to provide bounce light is the way to go.

This link may give you some ideas of wht you can do.

The better the light, the better the picture.
