Default How to use a close up +1 filter?

I got a B+W close up +1 filter for xmas and I'm not sure how it works. I've read that all close up filters allow you to do is to move closer to your subject, but I can't determine the difference. I also don't see a size difference between objects with and without the filter. How much closer can you get with a +1 filter? What else do I need to know about using these?

put your lens in manual focus and set the focus to its closest setting...find a smallish object and move yourself and the camera in and out until you find sharp focus on your object. Then screw on your close up filter and re-do the above. You should find the object is more magnified than it was in your shot with out the filter and you probably were able to get slightly closer to the object to find the sharp focus.
