Thumbs down Digital Projection

I belong to photography group made up of both digital and analog photographers. The traditional, or analog, photographers bring in prints for critique at our monthly meeting. No problem, you see the print as printed and critiqued as such.

Now, the digital photographers want to critique their images, as is only fair. Here's the rub - the projector. The school where we meet provides a room with a ceiling mounter projector which seems to be fine for Powerpoint and such but really leaves a great deal to be desired when it comes to images.

I know we need new projector. It needs lots of illumination - 1000lumins+, and needs a high contrast ration - 1000:1 or greater, and a bucket load of color - 16million or more. These seem to be the minimum specs. Other issues include a clear imaged edge-to-edge, uniformed color rendition, the ability to perform color management. We alos need the ability to show all the submitted images in the proper aspect ration. My initial feeling is that we should look at the 16:9 ratio as we have an iMac attached to the current projector and this is the standard ration on a lot of the new laptops systems.

I stumbled upon one manufacture that speced sRGB and AdobeRGB support. I've seem mention of "uniformity" and a number of other terms. Some of which are rather confusing.

One common theme is that there is no standard way of comparing all the various projectors on a feature by feature basis. We have about $1,500.00 to spend but I want to make sure that we get the best possible value for our money and con provide the critiques that our digital photographers are entitled to.

My question to you is - do you have any experience in conducting digital image critiques using a projector? and if so, what brands/models?

I appreciate any assistance/feedback that you might share.

Get your own prints. That's seriously the best way of doing it.
