Default Filter question

I recently bought a Nikon D60 with the kit lens (18-55mm) and an additional Nikon lens 55-200mm). I've done some research and decided to get a circular polarizer.

So to my question.......Should I get the filter to fit my kit lens or the longer lens? I like to shoot a lot of landscapes as well as my kids doing various activities. Can I get the larger polarizer (58mm) and still use it in any way with the 52mm lens? I've read some filters can be held but I forget why that is done.

Any ideas?

Get the larger one and a cheap step down ring.

Both of those lenses take the same filter. Why do you need a bigger one?

Because most lenses take a larger filter, and circular polarizers are expensive?

Not sure why you'd want to only go to a 58mm through, the only lens I can think of that uses that is the 50mm AF-S. A 67mm filter is big enough for most Nikon lenses, unless you plan to get a UWA, a super tele, or an 18-200mm. 77mm is the 'standard', but unfortunately, I have yet to find a quality 52mm-77mm adapter ring.

When I visited the camera shop the other day I was told they take two different size filters. I didnt have my gear with me (nor do I now) so I cant check. THey even looked up my lenses. Interesting.....But I gather from the above posts that I can use the larger size filters on the smaller lens with a step up ring. Obviously, I'll have to check the sizes on the lenses.

Thanks to all who contributed.

My advice is to buy your filters in 77mm and just get step-up rings.

And yes, the 18-55 and 55-200 use the same (52mm) filters.

Good Point!
Quality filters are expensive, and you will most likely eventually upgrade lenses. The most common filter size for pro grade/fast lenses is 77mm (at least in the Nikon world)
