i have a manfrotto 3021 tripod with a bogen 3055 ball head. i would like to replace the ball head with one that is a little lighter. i have no idea what will fit the tripod and what won't.
can someone recommend a lighter ball head for my tripod. i have a nikon d90 and my heaviest lens is sigma 50-150 f2.8 lens. i mostly want this tripod for landscapes and night photography. thanks in advance robin |

I have the same tripod, it's got a standard 3/8" post for the head. The Manfrotto 488 is a decent head, most likely lighter than what you have, and only costs around $100, depending on which QR system you buy it with. If you want a better head, the 468 has static drag adjustment, hydrostatic locking, and weighs about the same as the 488, but it's about $250.

firebox40dash5--does this mean that i can buy a ball head from kirk or really right stuff as long as it has a 3/8" post?
how do i know which QR to get? i want to eventually get a carbon fiber tripod. i was going to try and lighten the tripod i have by changing the ball head and then using the new ball head with whichever carbon fiber tripod i get. just want to know would this be a wise decision or wait and buy the carbon fiber tripod instead? robin Last edited by winclk; 12-19-2009 at 10:59 PM. |

As long as the head has the 3/8" socket, yes. Far as I know, pretty much every decent tripod and head uses a 3/8" stud on the legs, and socket on the head, other than really tiny/cheap stuff.
The diameters of the platform on the tripod and the base of the head might not be the same if you mix and match brands, but that doesn't really matter functionally. |
