Hi guys, I've been looking into ways of taking shots every couple of minutes for a few hours on Christmas Day for a way of documenting.
I don't really want to be holding a camera all day and not enjoying the day as much and making relatives uncomfortable with having it pointing at their faces all day. I want natural shots that people don't think are being taken and therefore won't force expressions and such. I also think it will create a nice photo album or set of shots. does anyone know of any free software to achieve this time lapse effect? I'm on a real budget and have seen camera control pro for nikon cameras can do this but I don't really want to pay for the software at the moment. Anyone help? Thanks in advance. |

You really have two choices - an intervalometer or tethered remote software, but given you're looking to do this without $$s, you are going to be limited to software based solutions.
If you shot with Canon, you'd already have the facility for time-lapse in the EOS Utility software that comes FREE with all the dSLRs. Given you sound like you're shooting Nikon, you might like to look at NKRemote - Breeze Systems Nikon camera control software for Nikon D90, Nikon D5000, Nikon D300, Nikon D700, Nikon D3 or Nikon D200 from Breeze Systems. It's US$95, but available for a 15 day FREE trial. I can't think of a better time to trial software than over the holidays ![]() Good luck!

It would also to be helpful to know if you have a computer to hook it up to (Windows or Mac) or an iPhone. Mainly because most of the reasonably priced solutions that I know of require one of those things. For example:
http://www.sofortbildapp.com/ Tethered shooting with an intervalometer in the program DSLR Camera Remote An iPhone app that works with both Mac and PC and the $20 app has an intervalometer built in. Although, if you haven't downloaded Camera Control Pro before, there is a 15 day demo of it, so if you downloaded closer to Christmas you would get a chance to use it then...

The D300 will do this by itself, don't know about the D40.

GPhoto is free and can do interval shooting for you. It runs on Linux, which is also 100% free. The only thing you need is a little time and patience in setting things up and learning how to work with it.

I too use gphoto. Installing the software can be a little tricky, but on a Mac it's close to automatic (and if you're using Linux, you should already know what to do).
I have a bit of info about setting up and using gphoto2 on Mac OS X if that helps you. Once you've set it up, it's easy to leave a laptop and your camera set up somewhere, happily taking photos all day long!

If anyone is interested, I was looking for some free software for my Nikon D60 and came across this neat little gadget. I understand it uses the infrared receiver to capture images at a preset interval. Kinda expensive though at $140 USD. https://www.pclix.com/shopping/shopd...arch=yes&bc=no
P.S. - If anyone knows of any software (preferably free) that will work with a Nikon D60 please let me know. Thanks.

Gphoto2, mentioned repeatedly above, is FREE and works with all Nikons made in the last 5 years or so.

cool thanks guys. will look into these solutions and find the best one. Might end up just using the trial of camera control pro to safe me the hassle of installing linux. especially seen as I will be using my brothers windows laptop and he won't want me fiddling around with it too much (my desktop computer won't be with me for xmas otherwise I'd use that)
