Default Lens Adapter, Hood, Filter? Help.

Hi,

I have a Canon Powershot S5 IS digital camera. I don't really understand anything about any of the extra gear you can put on the camera. Could anybody tell me what is a Lens Adapter and Hood? What do they do? Are they needed?

I was looking at:

Canon LAH-DC20 Conversion Lens Adapter (LA-DC58E) and Hood (LH-DC40) Set for the S5 IS, S3 IS & S2 IS Digital Camera

And I was also curious, are getting these adapters/hoods necessary for me to be able to use the following filters? Or should these filters already simply snap to my camera? And could somebody explain to me exactly what it is these filters do? Will they be a lot of help?

Crystal Optics 58mm UV, Polarizer & FLD Deluxe Filter kit (set of 3 + carrying case)

Thanks a lot for your feedback.

Jimmy

You will need the adapter in order to use the filters. The adapter is what allows you to screw the hood and the filters on. The purpose of a lens hood is to control flares from light sources off to the sides, and a side benefit is that it helps protect your lens.
