Default Did I get a bad lens? Newbie question...

So I ordered a new lens - 55-200 f/4-5.6 VR

Got it in and threw it on my camera, and the first test shot came out ok:

But the second shot came out pretty foggy looking, thought my eyes were playing tricks on me:

Then the third one came out horribly foggy:

I began to worry that I'd somehow ruined my camera body, so I put my kit lens back on for one more shot:

SO....

The new lens had been sitting in a box outside all day, in cold weather. Did I ruin it by using it cold? Im going to try a few more shots in the morning. Hoping I didnt screw something up.

When you bring it out from the cold, it'll fog up. It's usually better to seal the lens in a plastic bag and then bring it inside. The plastic will keep away the moisture while the lens warms up again. Once it's reached room temperature you can get it out of the bag.

Probably your lens is fine. Give the front (and perhaps the rear) lens element a good cleaning once it's warmed up, and try again.

It looks like condensation build up from coming in from the cold to the warm house. I would also air it out now. Don't put it in a case or anything. Leave it out with caps off to dry out fully. Then wipe the glass with your lens cloth.
