Default Best Wide Angle Lens for a Nikon d90

I was looking to get some input on the best wide angle lens for a D90. I will be shooting mostly landscapes, and am partial to prime. That being said, I want something as versatile as possible, and am open to zoom lenses. Thanks in advance.

I have been very happy with my Sigma 10-20mm HSM (older variable f/stop version). It is quite sharp and for landscapes you don't need a very fast lens. It is super wide at 10mm.

Nikon offers a 12-24mm and a 10-24mm. From what I read, quality of the 10-24mm is better. Osmosis Studio might reply and vouch for it. He bought one recently.

There is also the Nikon 16-85mm. It's not a dedicated wide angle but a very versatile lens. 16mm is the last end of the wide angle (24mm on a FF) and 85mm is perfect for portrait. Mine is on my D90 more than 50% of the time, I love it.

The last one I read good thing about is the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. Never tried it though.

Hope this help

I have heard very good things about the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. If I was looking for a wide-angle that would be my choice.

I second the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8, particularly if you find yourself liking primes over zooms. Here is my example gallery on flickr for that lens.

You could also try the search function here on DPS for "Ultrawide" or "Wide Angle," as it seems we have had this discussion at least 10 times in the last year . . .

Good luck deciding!

Yup.

The 10-24 is a great lens. I had been tempted by the 12-24 but found that 12 was just not quite wide enough.

The trick, though, is understanding that 10mm is WIDE. like, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wide. It takes some time to learn how to shoot that wide (and not shoot your toes in the process!)

Gives "shooting yourself in the foot" a whole new meaning

What Kirbinster said. I've got that same lens and use it on a D90 and I couldn't be happier with it.
