Sander has a very good point, but for most of us ,who don't shoot for long periods the ball head is superb. I have the Manfrotto 222 head which when mounted on tripod or mono pod, really does make life easier.. A superb piece of kit.

I've shot for 14 hours straight with a pan and tilt and a ballhead and the ballhead wears down your wrists SOOO MUCH! Cause ballheads rely on your hands to support the camera more than a pan a tilt if you need to constantly pan.

So yes, after a long day with a ballhead, I question anyone's sanity if they prefer ballheads if they actually have to pan.
Not sure I follow what you mean? My ball head has a separate pan control that I can leave unlocked to pan easily while the ball stays locked.
