Default Is tripod allowed in carry on luggage? or have to check in?

Hello everyone,

I just started photography and have learnt a lot from this forums. Thankyou for all contributions. It is time for me to get real and take pictures!

I am traveling domestic for Thanksgiving break and would like to take a tripod with me, its a Bogen Pro tripod, weighs about 6lb. When collapsed, it fits in my stroller and doesn't pop-out.

Is it OK to carry a tripod on the plane? Since it fits inside my bag, I don't see the airlines having a problem but what about the airport security?

anyone traveled recently? Thankyou for the advice

Precious

Likely will have to be checked, but to get a definitive answer, phone the airline and inquire as to their policy for carry on. That way there'll be no doubt in your mind.

As always, would depend on the particular airline. I have had good luck but your mileage may vary. Honestly, last time I flew (about a year and a half ago) we picked up a cheap tripod at the destination because I didn't want to fly out with one as we didn't want to check luggage. The tripod had it's own carry bag so on the way back I put it in there and looped the strap for that through the strap on my normal carry-on and put it on the belt with everything else and no problem, not a glance or a mention.

Check with your carrier. Some allow it, some don't.

If youre carrier does allow it, bring a printout of the page on their website that says so with you through security. They may want to double-check.

Hi, Not sure I understand.
The Airline carrier is asking for $20.00 for you to add the tripod in your regular luggage.
Unless you suitcase already is at the weight limit, this one seems strange to me.

Some charge an extra fee for "odd-shaped" or "oversize" luggage, which the tripod would fit if it were packed separately. It could also be considered an 'extra bag' which, in the US especially, is an instant $20+

man if i had a $800 gitzo I wouldn't want to check it in, even with a padded tripod bag (another ~$100)

we should have a poll on how users transport their their more expensive tripods

my tripod was only ~$200, which doesn't justify a puchase of ~$100 for a tripod bag, but I have no idea how I would tranport it if I went on a trip

Certainly in Europe a tripod would not be accepted in hand luggage, or I should say, it shouldn't be....It can be used as a weapon or worse still conceal weapons so it is a no no....

This depends on the carrier, not location.
