Default Lens Hood

I understand that a lens hood is almost a necessity. I have 2 lenses - a canon kit 17-55 and a new 75-250. Can I get the same lens hood for both lenses or do I need two different ones?
Are they really necessary? Thanks for the help

I don't believe Canon makes a 75-250mm lens. Are you sure you didn't mean the Canon 55-250mm f/4-5.6 lens or possibly the Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 lens? Or, is it a third-party lens?

In any case, no, you cannot use one lens hood for both lenses. Well, technically, you may be able to if they mount the same way, but it's not recommended. Lens hoods are designed specifically for the lenses they are meant for. You'll want the Canon ET-60 lens hood for the 55-250mm or 75-300mm lenses (if you do, indeed, own either of those lenses); that lens hood is designed for both. For your 17-55mm kit lens, you'll want the Canon EW-60C lens hood.

Lens hoods are not necessary to use the lens. They do help, though. They give your photos better contrast by blocking any stray light. Plus, they'll give the front element of your lens some protection.

Thanks for the information Nate, Very helpful. Mybad - The Canon lens I have is a 55-250 f4-5.6 IS so you are correct. I was trying to list the lens by memory and well...... Any tripod you recommend? I also want to get a remote for my Canon DSLR. Any recommendations there?

The type of tripod you'll want depends on what you need, really. I have a really simple Canon tripod for now; it's this one. But, I'll eventually upgrade to one that has a ball head and that is a little more heavy-duty. Two of the brands that I hear thrown around a lot as far as tripods go are Manfrotto and Gitzo. You may want to start there.

As far as remote shutters go, that depends on if you want a wired or wireless remote shutter release. Right now, I just have a cheap wired shutter release (made by Dot Line) that has only given me one problem so far. I don't know too much about the wireless remote releases, so maybe someone else can chime in.

Hope this helps.

I bought a cable release and a wireless remote on ebay for my canon 350D. They are dirt cheap on there. Later i saw another cable release that can be programmed to take a number of photos and also the shutter speed can be programmed into it. I can use it to take lets say 20 photos at 1/60 of second and even put in a delay between each shot...
