Default what size filter?

Hi...I have another question...how can I tell what size filter I need for my lens? As I said before I have a Nikon D40 with the 18-55mm lens. I am also asking for a 50mm 1.8 lens for Christmas and would like the protective filters for both.
Thanks

You can grab a ruler and measure, or look at the inscriptions on the lens itself, or the box it came in, or the specs on the Nikon website, or reviews, or you could wrap a piece of string around it and divide its length by 1/2 pi

Also, the Nikon lens caps also have their diameter inscribed on the inside.

Incidentally the filter size for both the 50 and the 18-55 is 52mm.

Nikon lenses also have the filter size written on the bottom of the lens, near the camera mount. It's a 0 with a slash through it, followed by a number like 52 or 77.

Not sure about other brand but I know Nikon include this information on their lenses.

Check the following image:

The last number is actually your filter/attachement size.

52mm
