Default Lenses for Nikon D60..does this work?

Will this lens work with the D60?

Amazon.com: Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras: Camera & Photo

I really want a 50mm but I am afraid that I am limited by having a D60 unless I drop big bucks for one.

Yes, the lens will work, but only with manual focus,D lenses will not AF on the D60 body. If you want a prime for low light check out the new 35mm 1.8 AF-S, its great and will AF on your body.

+1 on the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S. Great reviews, costs about $200 -- which is an incredible deal for a lens like that, much less one which is 100% functional on your D60.

And as a side note I understand a 50MM is a must have lens, so this seems to fit the bill. I am looking for a small lens for portrait photography in a small studio space.

There is nothing magic about 50mm lenses, except that on full frame cameras they tend to approximate the field of view (and perspective) that the human eye has. So, they're popular for general use, and companies have traditionally produced very good 50mm lenses.

However, on crop-sensor cameras (such as almost all DSLRs, with a few very expensive exceptions), a 30mm or 35mm lens is much closer to "normal". So, we're starting to see more high-quality 35mm lenses -- like the Nikon.

Strictly speaking it's not the "D" that makes it not AF, it's the "AF" as opposed to the required "AF-S". It's just that most (all?) AF-S lenses are also G lenses.

Almost all- only the 300mm f/4 and the 17-35mm f2.8 have aperture rings.

I'll third the 35mm AF-S recommendation. Great lens for the price.

So does the older 28-70 f/2.8, upon inspection.
