Thanks a lot for your thoughtful responses. I've always been wary of Tamron's lenses because some of their lenses get very middle of the line reviews (a lot of "3 star" reviews on Amazon). Sigma seems like an impressive lens maker and I will be watching the price of that lens carefully.

@jnelson I've been looking at the Tokina 11-16mm also but it seems a bit pricy. What do you think about the cheaper Tokina 12mm - 24mm f/4.0 PRO DX? Also - what is the difference between this Tokina 12-24 and this one?

one of the lenses has a built in motor for use on the D40, 40x, 60, 3000 and 5000. You would be fine with the $400 model since the D90 has the AF motor in the body. I haven't heard as many good reviews for the 12-24 as i have with the 11-16. Not to say it isn't good, i just haven't heard as much about it. I go back and forth b/c i like the range and price of the Sigma. And for landscape stuff it would be fine at a 3.5-4.5 aperture. But i hear stellar reviews of the Tokina and though it is a couple hundred dollars more and has less range, I think it would be great for some unique wide angle portraits at 2.8. Its enough to drive you mad!

As said previously, the extra mm (s) do make a difference! I like to put my Sigma on 11 or 12mm then go to 10mm just to see the difference. You wouldn't think, but you can get a lot more in the shot.

i have that sigma lens, and i love love LOVE it!! though that's not saying much, considering i've nothing else to compare it to. but if you went for the sigma, i don't think you'd be disappointed at all.

the superwide is SO MUCH FUN!

My 2 cents - I love the Sigma 10-20 as well. Great lens for the money, and I agree with Osmosis' comment about the f/3.5 version of the lens, the reviews seem to indicate it is not worth the extra money.

I agree with PowerPix

Bought mine just over a year ago & taken over 2,000 photos with it - great for cityscapes
