Default Filters

I am new to the DSLR game and had a question about filters specifically, and attachments in general. When sizing, do you always go 2mm larger than the lens size? Thanks in advance for any light shed.

I don't think so. Usually it is marked on the lens itself. I know my kit Canon lens is a 18-55mm and the lens takes a 58mm filter. For my 70-200mm it takes a 77mm filter. I also use a step down ring for my largest(77mm), expensive filters to fit my 17-70mm that takes a 72mm filter.

The lens should indicate its filter size -- get exactly that size, or it won't fit!

The most common sizes are 52mm (usually for small lenses, especially kit lenses), 72mm, and 77mm.

Or, get all your filters in the 77mm size (which is the most common, Pro size and often the largest) and simply get step-up rings for each lens. This minimizes the total number of filters you buy and, while more expensive per filter, will save money in the long run

Thanks ya'll. Would that be the number on the bottom of the lens?

Maybe. What number do you see?

On my Nikon lenses, the filter size is indicated by a 0 with a slash through it, and then the number in millimeters, like this:

∅72
