Default anybody use those cheap wired remotes off ebay?

I've seen some for like $5 that come from Hong Kong.

do they work?

I don't care if it lasts only a year or so, I just really can't spend $25 right now on Canon's wired shutter release.

should I get the cheap japanese one?

Absolutely, it's just a switch and some wire and a plug, you can make your own for that matter...
I've been very happy with my JJC from dealextreme.com.
