Hi Ted,

A while ago the dirt cheap ones caught my attention. There were loads of scanners on sale for under €100 in the Netherlands about half a year ago. I did a little research and what I found out is that those dirt cheap ones give you exactly that result: dirt. The advise most people gave was to rent a proper scanner at a professional store, preferably one with some form of calibration in it. Most scanners will provide a half decent resolution, but they fail at retaining the colour spectrum. Personally, I'd take a few slides with me to the store and have a sales person show the scanner to me. Right there and then you can determine if the quality is good enough to spend time scanning all your other slides and negatives.

I haven't looked into it in more detail, but at least I thought I'd share what I found out on the cheap ones. I'm sure you can google for rental places in your area.

Good luck!

Nikon Coolscan. No substitute except for the large desk-sized scanners labs use. That cost roughly 10x-100x more.

I have an Epson V500 that does a good job, costs under $200.
