Default Advice on which lens

I have got a canon eos 400d, I have a tamron 70-200 5.6 but would like a bigger zoom.
Can anybody suggest a lens that wont cost the earth. I just do photography as a hobby. Would extenders for my tamron do, or would it be better to get a new lens.

I would appreciate your comments

Regards

Tamron don't make a 70-200 f/5.6. f/2.8, perhaps?

If that's the case, then it can take a teleconverter (extender), but there are some drawbacks.

I'm confused. Tamron makes a 70-200 f/2.8, but not an f/5.6. They do make a 70-300 f/4-f/5.6. These are two very very different lenses.

And if you have the 70-300 f/4-f/5.6, I have to tell you that nearly any lens that goes longer than 300mm is going to cost a lot more than $300, excepting mirror lenses which have huge compromises in image quality.

Can you give us an actual budget in numbers? Everybody's idea of what constitutes expensive can be different. And a clarification on which lens you've actually got would help.

Sorry, my mistake its a 55-200 tamron lens 1:4-5.6.

As its just for a hobby I dont want to spend more than about £350.00.

At that price range, you're not going to do much better, and probably worse to extend the reach. There's the Sigma 70-300 f/4-f/5.6 APO for about £150; not going to give you stellar image quality, and very slow, but it does do 300mm. There's the Canon EF-S 55-250 IS, which is about £250.00, but isn't that much longer than your current lens, although it is stabilized.

The lens you probably really want is the EF 70-300 f/4-f/5.6 IS USM but it's around £420.00.

Thanks for the reply, I shall probably save up the extra money and go for the one you suggested.
