What do you want to shoot? 'Must Have' is different for everyone depending on what they shoot. Even someone who generalizes and wants to shoot everything would have a different must have list than someone who focuses on a specific area of photography.

"must have" for landscape for me would be an ultra wide angle lens + some filters + sturdy and lightweight tripod. You can do landscape with just kit lens actually, it's a matter of composition and angles, which is perfectly fine to do with just 18mm kit lens
Wedding would be asking for really pricy gears such as 85 1.4, 70-200 F/2.8 50 1.4 and may be really sharp mid zoom range lenses + flashes and reflectors I reckon...

What's your body right now?
My favourite is my Tokina 11-16. It's reallyyy short range but excellent in quality with constant F/2.8 along the way... Some source in the internet say it's even better than Nikon's 10-24 or 12-24... But it won't AF with D40-D5000...
Other choices may be Sigma 10-20 which is a popular one.

I have a D5000, I also dont know how to find lenses for this through 3rd parties what do I need to look for? I have been looking at all nikon lenses thus i have concluded that I will need a wide angle 10-24 or 12-24, 50mm 1.4, 50-200mm perhaps, and a macro (these are the hardest to figure out I dont know a thing about macro).

Thanks!

Stop.

Take a DEEEEP breath.

Okay.

Do you knwo your camera body inside and out? And I mean REALLY know! Do you know composition? Do you know how to get the most out of what you have?

if the answer is "no" or "sorta" to any of those, stop and keep learning

I'd recommend you to go with Nikon if your budget allows you to...
Basically, try to focus on one branch first. I chose landscape as my first, and now I'm thinking of moving on to portrait. Don't spread your branch too much coz it will cost a lot of money and also it's really hard to be really good at all aspects at a short time...
3rd party lenses sometimes are not as good as Nikon's/Canon's but they're always almost half price. I decided to get Tokina 11-16 after doing quite deep research on its quality and I found out that it's much worth than Nikon's 10-24 or 12-24 for total landscape.

Thanks for that I believe I know my camera pretty well, I mean I know what it can do.

And I'll focus on one part instead of all of them. I tend to be an instant satisfaction person. So I'm trying but its hard it like all these new toys and not sure which one to play with first.
