Did you see the post I wrote above your response? Evidence. Tons of evidence. Go for broke. I'm actually not here to do your homework and decision making for you.

Thing is, the 17-40 is only f/4 (not f/2.8) and unstabilized. The thinking of "I need it to work on a full-frame, too!" depends, I think, on how SOON you plan on moving to full-frame. If the timeframe is more than a year, I say go for EF-S lenses all you want. Lenses tend to hold value relatively well (check out the used prices vs. new on the lens you're interested in). You can think of the price difference as your "rental" feel for the time you're going to use the lens. And, of course, if you plan on holding onto your crop body after you get a full frame as your second body, an EF-S lens can still be useful.

May be in future I can think of a telephoto lens to complement the EF range.

Is my thinking right? or I should be thinking about EF-S lenses?

I was also wrestling with this. I honestly think though that if I were to invest in a full frame body in the future I would not still be looking at consumer lenses. I would only be buying L lenses with a high end body. Period. *Most* pros that I chat to or see have full frame and L lenses. This is a tool of their trade - these are their moneymakers. What I am trying to get at here is full frame is not in my sights for a while, and I would rather invest in some glass for now. Many say that the only reasons the 17-55 is not in the L series are that it is EF-S and the composites used in the barrel are slightly different, but the glass is L. I only mention the 17-55 as that is what I am most interested in, but I am certain there are 1 or 2 others in that same category.

So I am not going to let EF-S scare me off it for now as I will keep this 50D body of the next forseeable future.

I wrestled with the decision of going full frame or not for quite awhile. Because of budget contraints, I knew I could not afford a full frame camera and L lenses, so I went with the 17-55 f/2.8 IS. Pricey, but I couldn't be happier. I agree with Sybren about loving that lens. I considered the 24-105 f/4 L, but it didn't have the lower light capability I wanted. The 24-70 f/2.8 L didn't have the IS. The 17-55 had both, the only drawback was the EF-S. I've used it for weddings, portraits and landscapes and never regretted the purchase.

It comes down to budget
If you are prepared to spend double in the F2.8, so for it
If you want really good product at 1/2 the price, go with the 17-40L

both will do a great job

Hi,

Inkista, sorry if you felt that I was asking you to do my homework. That was not what I ment. I did some results research between the two lenses and also some others as mentioned by several friends here on dps. I found a couple of websites by googling which gives some good comparison.

Andrewdt, thanks for shaking my fundamentals regarding the Full frame and crop sensor. I really required it. And ultimately it comes back to how many $$ I have with me to spare.

Saralonde, This is really a good point you make. I will really think about this as this will give me the existing range of 18-55 + 1 more on the wide angle side

I will certainly make my decision and post back here. Right now, I just found out that I can do Manual focusing with the lens but Automatic focusing is not available. This will help me do some photography while I am in India for Holidays.

Thanks for the support

why dont you pick up a second hand replacement of the same lens for your trip. They will be very cheap as people are dumping their kit lenses

gturner,

That is the second best plan. I have my uncle's old 18-55 kit lens which is not IS but it should be alright for the mean time.
