Manfrotto 190XPROB + 804RC2 is around that price in Australia...
Check out local store, that tripod as a good one to start I reckon... Really popular among my friends

While I agree that manfrotto and all those brands are awesome. I havent had any problems with my NZ$50 tripods, and they are around 3-5 yrs old now. Sometimes I need to weight one down with something hanging under, if its windy as it is a bit on the light side.

I would say unless you need a top end tripod for a particular reason (such as weather-proof seals, carbon fibre, etc), go for a lower price one, save the money and get more lenses/filters/memorycards/flashgun/etc. I own two cheap tripods, and never broken either - only upgraded for a bigger height and kept the old one for travelling.

If you visit Melbourne, make sure you go to Mornington Pennisula and Greate Ocean Road. They're great scenic drive where you can stop by and take many pictures
Try to visit Parks Victoria: Parkweb.vic.gov.au for national parks in Victoria
Cheers mate, enjoy your visit to OZ

I have an inexpensive tripod and a more expensive one. My "cheap" one doesn't have to capacity to hold my heaviest kit (100-400mm lens, body, grip, flash). The "cheap" one is also a little flimsy, it wiggles in the slightest wind.

My "good" one will support 11 pounds (which sounds like a lot until you start adding up the weights of all the gear you have). The tripod also has a center post the goes horizontal, and the legs can splay out so the camera is at ground level (a really cool feature).
